EXPERTS URGE MEDIA PRODUCERS TO SAY NO TO THE SEXUALISATION OF CHILDREN

On Tuesday morning Julie Gale and Jean Kilbourne held keynote speeches about the negative consequences of the sexualisation of children and teenagers in the media.

The beginning of the presentation was detailed by Jean Kilbourne from the Wellesley Center for Women, USA.

She discussed the graphic and negative sexual messages embedded in today’s advertising; explaining that all of the aspects of advertising in the media contribute to youth mental illnesses such as depression, eating disorders and low self-esteem.

But why is such a negative influence being placed on this generation of children and youth? According to Jean it is because advertisers need to promote consumerism and embed in the heads of tomorrow’s future shoppers the culture of “to be is to buy”. Jean also said that the effects on children worldwide is “Stealing youth’s childhood and robbing them of the gradual accumulation of sexual knowledge throughout their developing years.”

The second half of the presentation was hosted by the exuberant Julie Gale, creator of the campaign ‘Kids Free 2B Kids’; which promotes awareness about the sexualisation of children.

Julie’s key point described the need to speak up about sexualising media and their influences on the world’s children.

After being questioned about what young people can do to make a difference to help with this problem she said that “today’s youth should be doing four things: networking with other youth, using the media to help promote a positive influence, speaking out; and saying ‘we have all had enough’.”

Overall, this presentation was very interesting and informative. It is now our duty as today’s youth to promote the decreased sexualisation of children in the media.
