A TOOL FOR EVERY TASK: SOCIAL MEDIA AND NETWORKING

The founding director of the organization Media Snackers believes that when using media “you have to make a mess to find how you can go forward.” It is this theory that dictates how people worldwide use social media and social networking.

DK told Summit delegates that social media includes a lot more than Facebook; it also includes all communication and connected internet applications. DK showed a huge range of these programs in this very interesting session including: bubbl.us, Blogger, animoto, issuu, capzles and ustream. According to DK, these are only a scratch on the surface of social media tools.

DK explained that social media and networking have opened many new and exciting opportunities in the 21st century; Companies like IKEA and Ford are are embracing this media change and using networking websites to communicate with consumers and give them the chance to enquire about their brands at the source.

Learning to use and understand these applications is just a matter of playing according to DK; this means trying new things and experimenting with more extensive knowledge about technology.

To conclude the session DK left participants with a thought provoking quote: “If you only have a hammer and no other tools, you see every challenge as a nail. To improve the future of social media, more ‘tools’, or technology must be given to those worldwide who are only able to use one tool or form of technology.”

It is in this scenario that each and every child should have the opportunity to use and carry a tool shed for any challenge.
